Defective Tire Recalls in 2012

Comments Off

As we close out 2012 and begin traveling to celebrate the start of 2013, roadway safety should be our number one concern. Four major tire recalls of the past year have taught us to thoroughly inspect our vehicle’s tires before and after long trips, and stay informed as to recall of potentially dangerous tires. Here are four notable tire recalls from the latter part of the past year, and information on the reason for the recall, and if affected, how to participate in each.

MICHELIN TIRE RECALL

Michelin North America, Inc. (Michelin) recalled the following tires: Michelin XZU3 LRJ, size 305/85R22.5, and Michelin XZU2 LRJ, size 12R22.5, produced from October 23, 2005 through September 3, 2011; and Michelin XM505 LRJ, size 305/85R22.5, produced from April 18, 2010 through May 8, 2010, and January 23, 2011 through February 12, 2011. The recalled tires were discovered to have a casing experienced a loss of integrity and, in some cases, rapid air loss. Rapid air loss is dangerous as it can cause accidents due to vehicles losing control. Michelin will provide all customers who purchased these tires with information on how to obtain a new set. The safety recall began April 30, 2012.

TBC CORPORATION TIRE RECALL

On July 2, 2012 TBC Corporation (TBC) recalled Sigma Stampede Radial SUV tires, size P265/70R17, equipped with DOT code UTT6TX60112. Contaminated rubber, used in the tread compound, resulted in tread separation. Such separation can cause loss of vehicular control and accidents. TBC is offering to replace all potentially affected tires, and may include a free mounting and balancing. Owners may contact TBC at 1-901-363-8030.

KUMHO TIRE RECALL

Kumho Tire U.S.A., Inc. (Kumho) recalled the Kumho Solus KH25 a passenger car tire, size 225/45R17, produced from August 21, 2011 through June 23, 2012. The affected tires had the potential for sidewall cracking, resulting in loss of air. Kumho will replace those tires potentially affected free of charge. The recall began in August, 2012 . Owners may contact Kumho at 1-909-428-3999.

YOKOHAMA TIRE RECALL

Yokohama Tire Corporation (Yokohama), in October 2012, recalled certain AVID Touring S tires, size 215/65R16 98T SL, produced from February 2009 to April 2009. Irregular geometry in these tires caused a turn up area above the tire bead in the lower sidewall. This issue leads to potential lower sidewall crack and a rapid loss of tire inflation. Yokohama is offering to replace these tires free of charge. Owners may contact Yokohama at 1-800-423-4544.

If you are still using tires that have been involved in a recall it is important that you contact the appropriate corporations and receive replacement tires immediately. It will provide you the peace of mind needed when embarking on those New Year’s trips. When it comes to your travels, staying educated and informed is the first step towards an enjoyable experience on the road.
