I saw a story that the North Carolina Medical Board is considering making medical malpractice data available to consumers. The board would publish the doctor’s name, the settlement amount, and an optional field where the doctor could disclose the nature of the suit and explain why he or she chose to settle the claim.
I think that is a great idea. Right now, there is very little data out there to help consumers evaluate their potential providers. And there is a real need. A doctor once told me, “Think of the disparity between good and bad lawyers, and realize that the same disparity exists in doctors.” This might be one tool that would help patients learn a little before they make important decisions on who treats them.
And yes, I think this would be great for lawyers also.
